Netflix Stranger Things: Metallica's Master of Puppets

**There may be some spoilers below, read with caution, we warned you! **

DUDE, MOST METAL EVER!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock then you may have heard of Kate Bush’s 80s single Running Up That Hill has been making quite a buzz lately. The song was featured during the season final of the Netflix hit show Stranger Things. It hit a BIG milestone after re-entering the charts after 37 years and reached number one on the UK charts. It was also trending worldwide on social media such as TikTok and Twitter.

It seems like the 80s are here to dominate the music charts as it's now Metallica’s time to shine. During the season final, the beloved metal head character Eddie Munson played legendary heavy metal band Metallica’s Master of Puppets in the Upside Down to lure Vecna’s little demon bats away from Nancy, Robin, and Steve so that they can get to Vecna to destroy him. There’s no denying that it was a show stopper and easily the best scene of the whole season (no arguments here).

Why this song?

This scene was written by the creators of the show the Duffer Brothers.

In an interview with Variety, the creators discussed why they chose the song for such a thrilling scene to date…

“It was another one of those ‘it has to be this song,’ moments,” Felder says. “This part of the story was anticipated to be a pivotal and especially hair-raising scene in which Eddie heroically stood tall for the fight of his life... No other song was discussed further, and we jumped in to clear it straight away."

What a great way to pay homage to such an iconic band.

Metallica praised the episode for the use of the song via their Instagram page.

Master of Puppets

Metallica’s third studio album was released in 1986, the same year The Stranger Things final season takes place. It reached number 39 on the Billboard charts and was well received by critics. Frontman James Hetfield stated the song of the same name is about how drugs can take control of you like a puppet on strings. After Eddie’s epic Guitar scene the song shot to the charts worldwide just like Kate Bush and has peaked an interest in new curious young listeners on Spotify and other music streaming sites.
