National Metal Day!

"THESE GO TO 11."

Every year on November 11th the metal community comes together to celebrate what's called 'National Metal Day' or 'Metal Day'.

This day is inspired by the classic mockumentary film 'This is Spinal Tap' released in 1984.

Why the 11th? Fictional character Nigel Tufnel described to an interviewer that his amplifier knob goes up to 11 compared to standard amplifiers that go up to 10. This scene became a classic among those that loved the movie.

The day was first celebrated in 2011 (yes, it was 11/11/11) by music channel VH1 which played non-stop classic rock music and specials docs throughout the day.

ORIGINS OF METAL

The genre Metal originated from industrial working class areas within England, where a number of factories would process metal and steel. Early metal bands such as Judas Priest’s Glenn Tipton (guitarist) had remarked on their use of reference to the sound of these factories as a direct influence on their sound. Metal was also made famous by Black Sabbath with their heavy use of loud clashing guitar solos.

Metal wasn't just inspired by steel factories but by blues rock which inspired bands such as The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and The Animals. The genre developed many different sub-genres such as thrash to nu-metal.

Why not crank it up to 11 and rock out in your favourite rock band tee!
