Merry Christmas!

Christmas

The Santa hats are out, the Christmas songs are on the radio (more The Ramones’ Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight) than Mariah) and the office is feeling jolly – it can only be the happiest time of year!

As well as celebrating the arrival of a fat guy in a red suit bearing presents and the birth of the son of God, Christmas has some important musical anniversaries, too. In fact, the Sex Pistols played their last ever UK gig on Christmas Eve, 1977 and the Beatles’ nine-week run at number 1 on the UK chart began on Christmas Day 1965. The album? Rubber Soul, which spent an impressive 42 weeks in the chart in total.

Whatever your plans over the festive period, eat drink and be merry, but pay homage to the great musical anniversaries we have, too in your new Amplified t-shirt (because there is one under your tree, right?)

Merry Christmas from everybody at Amplified!

For the first time ever Sex Pistols going commercial!

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

We all know pop songs are common in TV advertising, but Sex Pistols’ music has yet to be used in a commercial … until now. We’ve heard they will be featured on a British ad during this season’s European Champions League. UK’s most infamous punk band will be working with bookmakers William Hill.

The million dollar question …. which song is it? Give up! You’ll never guess:  The Top 10 1977 British single “Pretty Vacant,” from the Pistols’ landmark album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols

The voice of frontman John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) has been used in commercials before, but it will be the first time a Sex Pistols song is used in this fashion. In 2008, Lydon contributed to a campaign for Country Life butter. Of course he was called a “sell-out” at the time and even worse, he did say that they money from that campaign helped finance the recent tour for his other band, Public Image Ltd.
